Boathouse 4 Workshop Volunteer

This role is part of the Visitor Operations team at Portsmouth Historic Quarter, based in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard- Boathouse 4 workshop. Workshop volunteer teams assist with a broad range of tasks to maintain and conserve a range of boats in our care. 

Duties: 

You'll support the PHQ Shipwright & Workshop Manager and Bosun to fulfil and complete planned projects for individual boats. Tasks will vary but include:

- Learning and using woodworking skills like sawing, drilling and fastening wood

-Painting and varnishing and applying protective coating to boats

-Assisting with more complex tasks like replacing planks, repairing damaged fiberglass or other structural repairs

- Helping to prepare boats for use, including cleaning and wash down, attaching hardware and launching them from the boathouse

-Inventory Management - helping to keep track of tools, materials and equipment

-Adhering to all Health & Safety regulations and requirements in the workshop and reporting faults to the Shipwright & Workshop Manager

-Interacting with visitors to provide an insight to the work being undertaken on each boat

-Passing on any visitor feedback to staff

Skills

-Minimum 18 years old

-An interest and enthusiasm for boats and boating

- Willing to learn new skills and techniques

-Teamwork, communication and working well with others

- Happy to be a passionate ambassador for Portsmouth Historic Quarter, the Dockyard and Boathouse 4
