Portsea Library Community Engagement Volunteer

As a Community Engagement Volunteer, you will help strengthen relationships with local residents and community partners, raise awareness of what the library offers, and support the co‑production of a new Wellbeing Hub in partnership with Hive Portsmouth’s Community Helpdesk. This is a people‑focused role, ideal for someone who enjoys conversation, listening, and helping shape inclusive community spaces.

Key ResponsibilitiesConnecting with Local Communities

• Build positive relationships with local residents, groups, and community partners
• Promote library services, activities, and the developing Wellbeing Hub
• Have friendly conversations with visitors to understand their interests and needs

Gathering Community Insight

• Listen actively to understand what activities, services, and resources would benefit local people
• Share feedback and insights with library staff and the Hive Portsmouth team

Supporting Inclusive Community Activities

• Promote and help develop inclusive activities such as:
  • Reading groups
  • Craft or cultural sessions
  • Family activities
  • Digital skills support
  • Wellbeing programmes
• Help ensure activities engage a wide range of people, including those who may not currently use library services

Encouraging Co‑Production

• Encourage residents to share their skills, ideas, and talents
• Support community‑led initiatives using the library as a shared space
• Help co‑create a welcoming environment where grassroots ideas can grow

Promoting the Library as a Community Hub

• Champion the library as a space for:
  • Lifelong learning
  • Social connection
  • Creativity
  • Community resilience
• Help visitors feel valued, welcome, and included

- Friendly, approachable, and confident speaking with people from different backgrounds- A good listener with a genuine interest in people’s experiences- Comfortable starting conversations and building relationships- Passionate about inclusion, wellbeing, and community development
