About the organisation
We are a volunteer-run, not for profit organisation formed in 2010. We’ve worked extensively with the local university, providing film screenings to students in the Eldon Building for many years. Our mission is great art and culture for everyone. We were formed to fill a film exhibition gap in Portsmouth – we felt there was not enough independent, foreign and arthouse film being screened at local multiplex venues such as the Vue in Gunwharf. We aim to bring people together and advance education of the public through film and the fine arts. We have celebrated diversity by screening specially-themed films for Black History Month. We have also done this through our LGBTQ+ Film Festival, which included discussion panels from those in the community.
We bring niche forms of film exhibition to locals every Summer through our popular drive-in and outdoor cinema operations. Films are shown on a giant airscreen as the sun goes down between June and August.
Our Recovery Festival hosted every November in the mighty King’s Theatre has been attended by the likes of the Deputy Lord Mayor. Gives locals a chance to gain a deeper sympathy and understanding for those who have struggled with various forms of addiction.
We finally got our very own permanent home in May 2022 – Southsea Cinema & Arts Centre on Palmerston Road.
