Volunteer Peer Support Person

Purpose of the Role
To support the development and delivery of a peer-led mental health support group, offering empathy, encouragement, and practical help to others with lived experience of mental health challenges.

Key Responsibilities

• Help set up and prepare the space for group sessions (e.g. arranging seating, refreshments, materials).
• Welcome and engage attendees in a friendly, non-judgmental manner.
• Support facilitation of group discussions or activities, if comfortable.
• Share lived experience appropriately to foster connection and hope.
• Help with basic admin tasks (e.g. sign-in sheets, feedback forms).
• Promote the group locally and encourage participation.
• Attend planning meetings and contribute ideas to shape the group.

• Arts Cinema in Southsea, Portsmouth

Skills

Skills and Experience Needed

• Lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery.
• Good listening and communication skills.
• Reliable, respectful, and able to maintain confidentiality.
• Comfortable working in a team and with diverse individuals.
• No formal qualifications required – empathy and openness are key.

Support and Training Provided

• Induction and ongoing support from the Peer Hub Facilitator.
• Opportunities for peer support training and skill development.
• Regular check-ins and reflective practice sessions.
• Mandatory PCC training, e.g. Safeguarding, GDPR etc.

Time Commitment

• Flexible, up to 16 hours per week.
• Group sessions may run weekly or fortnightly, with occasional planning meetings.
