Volunteer gardener for a nursing home in Southsea

We are looking for a volunteer gardener to help with keeping our outdoor spaces vibrant and welcoming in a Southsea care home. This role helps maintain the wellbeing of our potted plants and garden areas, while also creating opportunities for residents to enjoy the benefits of nature and light gardening activities.You will:

  • Regularly water and tend to potted plants in designated garden areas.
  • Monitor plant health, reporting any issues such as pests, wilting, or overgrowth to staff.
  • Re-pot, prune, or tidy plants as needed to support healthy growth and appearance.
  • Coordinate with staff to align care routines with seasonal planting needs.
  • Engage residents (when appropriate and supported by staff) in light gardening or plant-care activities to encourage social interaction and wellbeing.

We will provide all necessary materials and tools will be prepared in advance for each visit

Volunteers will be supported by staff during resident engagement activities.

References:

Professional references can be from a current or past employer, someone you have worked with or volunteered with, or from an education setting such as a teacher. They must have known you for at least two years. 

Character references must be from someone who knows you well on a personal level. It can be a friend, or someone you work with, volunteer with etc. It cannot be a family member. They must have known you personally for at least two years. 

DBS - You will be required to complete a DBS check. You will need photo and proof of address ID for this. 

As this role is in a care home, you are required to complete online training.

Skills

  • Enjoyment of gardening and spending time outdoors.
  • Reliability and willingness to commit to regular visits.
  • A friendly, patient approach when engaging with residents.
  • Basic understanding of plant care
