About us
Loaves of Love is a Portsmouth community project supporting marginalised women through the joy of baking. Our free baking classes bring women together in a welcoming and supportive environment, helping them build confidence, learn practical skills and feel part of their local community.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for local chefs and experienced bakers to join our volunteer team and help us run our baking classes.
You don't need to be available for every class. Our volunteer chefs work on a rota, so you can give as much or as little time as your availability allows - ideally one or two classes a month.
As a volunteer chef, you will:
- Plan and teach a three-hour baking class, choosing recipes for bread, cakes, pastries or other baked goods that can be completed during the session.
- Prepare for your class and make sure all the necessary ingredients and equipment are available.
- Purchase ingredients where needed, or coordinate with other volunteers to arrange this.
- Share your knowledge and enthusiasm for baking with a diverse group of women, some of whom may not speak English as their first language.
- Help create a friendly, inclusive and encouraging atmosphere where everyone can enjoy learning and baking together.
- Occasionally attend volunteer meetings to share ideas and help shape the future of the project.
When do we need you?
Our classes take place on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
You would normally volunteer for one or two three-hour sessions a month, depending on your availability. A rota system means you won't be expected to teach every class.
There may also be occasional volunteer meetings, with dates arranged in advance.
Interested?
We'd love to hear from you if you think you could help. Whether you're a professional chef, a retired baker, work in catering or simply have strong baking skills and enjoy teaching others, your experience could make a real difference.
Don't forget you can add up any volunteering hours as part of Team 100 Opportunity - Hive Portsmouth or part of the Donate 100 things challenge Opportunity - Hive Portsmouth.
