A volunteer walk leader will ensure that the group are kept safe, that the risk assessed route is adhered to and that everyone walks at their own pace. All new walkers complete a health questionnaire when they join the scheme and the leader completes a register. The leader ensures the forms are sent in every week to the scheme co-ordinator for data input.
Wellbeing Walks is an accredited scheme which focuses on helping people to improve or maintain their level of fitness. People join the scheme for all sorts of reasons and with varied programme of weekly walks we aim to provide something for everyone.
Participants in the scheme will gain both physical health benefits and a boost to their wellbeing. It is also an opportunity to socialise too. These daytime walks appeal to all age groups and there are walks for all levels of ability. It's a drop in scheme that takes place all year round. Many of the walkers finish the walk and then go for a cup of tea. Health care professionals often recommend that someone takes more exercise and walking may be ideal for people with a low level of fitness. Our shortest walks are a maximum of 30 minutes and offer plenty of seating if a rest is needed. There are many others that will take around an hour and some of those include steps and inclines. Walking can help someone to reduce weight, lift their mood and lower their blood pressure. Becoming more active can reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Being part of the scheme can lead to new friendships and provide additional social opportunities.
