Knit to help Seafarers

About us

Stella Maris is the largest ship-visiting network in the world.

We improve the lives of seafarers and fishers through our network of local chaplains and seafarer centres, expert information, advocacy, and spiritual support.

Seafarers are often ill-equipped to deal with the cold conditions they find onboard. Our volunteer knitters provide invaluable support for seafarers by helping them to keep warm.

Our volunteers

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and are of varying ages. Some of our volunteers have a connection to the sea, for example they may have been a seafarer once themselves or they may have a relative who worked in a port or at sea. You do not need to have any connection to the sea to get involved.

Knitted items include:

  • Woolly hats
  • Fingerless mittens
  • Balaclavas

Where can I take my knitted items?

Items will need to be dropped off to Portsmouth Central Library for collection / delivery to the ports. You can find more information and some patterns to get you started once you have registered your interest.
