HIVE Portsmouth operates a digital loan service to voluntary groups and organisations for people to stay in touch with support services, and to improve their wellbeing using technology.
We have heard back from users of the scheme that they need more help in getting started with the devices, which are with them initially on an eight-week loan basis. We are aware that other people may already have access to their own devices but lack the skills to use them fully.
This is where we need your help!
Do you have a passion for the power of technology?
Technology can help people to gain or regain their independence by allowing them to stay in touch remotely with support services and engage in online activities of interest or help, whether online shopping, activities, clubs, classes and importantly stay in touch with family and friends. Use of technology can help reduce isolation, increase support networks and provides something fun and relaxing to do with online games, TV, radio and other entertainment services. When something goes wrong with a person's technology suddenly all of this is taken away – as a Digital Buddy, you can help them to get it back and help others to learn the first skills in using technology.
What will being a Digital Buddy require?
As a Digital Buddy you will use your IT skills to help residents in all sorts of ways.
· Supporting clients with their tech support issues. This can be as simply as how to turn a device on, to how to charge it, or how to connect to a Wi-Fi network.
· Assisting someone to set up an email account.
· Mentor clients on feeling comfortable with using technology.
You will be able to receive free training in digital skills from Portsmouth College who have kindly offered to help ‘train our trainers’ so that you have the support needed to become a local Digital buddy. This will help you to feel confident in your digital skills and in being able to help others.
We would love to hear from you! Please register your interest with a summary of why you would like to volunteer for this role and what suitable experience you have. To take forward your application we will seek two references and consent to obtain an enhanced DBS check.
There are no set hours for this volunteering role, although we would prefer it if you were able to commit a couple of hours on a regular basis, perhaps weekly or fortnightly to suit you.
· Love to help others.
· Comfortable using IT and computer or tablet device
· Ability to communicate well with people
· Patience and empathy
As you may be helping vulnerable adults you will need an enhanced DBS check and references.
