NCS seeks Community Projects to support – would you like their help?

4 March 2017

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity that helps young people build skills for work and life, while taking on new challenges and meeting new friends.

Year 11 and 12 students and 16 and 17 year olds not in education can develop the tools and belief to unlock their potential and make a positive impact in their communities. NCS gives thousands of young people across England the chance to:

  • Meet other young people from all backgrounds and tackle outdoor challenges on an exciting residential week away from home.
  • Join with local businesses and social leaders to learn new skills for work and life and discover more about their area.
  • Make their mark by developing and delivering local volunteering projects that matter to them.

Throughout the summer months NCS will engage with around 300 local young people aged 16-17 years old in the Portsmouth area. A big part of what we will be doing with these young people will involve them giving something back to their local community.

Do you know of a community facility or organisation that could benefit from a team of volunteers considering helping out for their social action week or two?

Social action projects could take many different forms such as: fundraising for materials to redecorate a community room and then undertaking the redecoration; creating a small landscaped garden or vegetable allotment; helping the homeless or organising an event – such as a music concert for terminally ill children.

If this sounds like a good opportunity for helping out a good cause in your local community please get in touch directly or connect me up to your recommended organisation or community group so we can discuss your ideas for a possible social action project in further detail ready for summer 2016.

Our programmes start on 27th June and the social action projects will be taking place from 12th July – 19th August.

There is no cost involved to the community group – just a little time to meet the team and scope the project ideas out with them and then enabling the young people to access to site – all materials and manpower are provided through NCS – there will be team of about 14 young people and 2 staff who can spend almost two weeks working on the project – approximately one week (30 hours) planning and one week (30 hours) delivering the project.
