Volunteer group coordinator for Ethnic gardening project

The Independence and Wellbeing Team is part of Portsmouth City Council Adult Social Care. We support adults to stay independent in the community and improve their wellbeing.

 The Independence and Wellbeing Team runs a gardening project for anybody who is interested in growing vegetables from different countries.  It gives community members the opportunity to enjoy time outside, do some growing and harvesting and also meet other people. All adults are welcome. The group runs on a weekly basis in a community garden in Landport.

Tasks of the volunteer group coordinator include:

-       Group facilitation: make participants feel welcome, participants register etc.

-       Set up tea and coffee making facilities.

-       Oversee the gardening activities and coordinate what needs to be done.

-       Carry out some gardening together with group members.

-       Work with community development officer in Independence and Wellbeing team to coordinate and develop the group.

Skills

Essential skills:

  •       Very good communication and interpersonal skills
  •        Be positive and encouraging
  •        Good organisational skills
  •        Intercultural competence, able to relate to people from different cultures
  •        Some basic knowledge of gardening

  • Not suitable for under 18's
  • Will require a criminal record check (DBS)
