Supporting You at Home Volunteer

Our Royal Voluntary Service is powered by people like you at our heart, sharing time to help older members of your community to stay healthy, independent and active in their own homes, often after a period in hospital.

If you join our Portsmouth area volunteers, you will be supported locally by Diane, and also the wider Hampshire team, Tessa, Colin and Sue. We are here to direct your efforts and support you every step of your engagements.

There can be many different ways to support an individual, so the first step will usually be an assessment by a Service Coordinator. This is very much led by the person receiving the support, as it's about what they'd like to achieve. They'd then be matched to a volunteer – someone local, with similar interests.

The plan could include activities such as:

  • Assisted shopping, with nutrition and hydration information
  • Activity programmes to address muscle loss, for example one to one or group 'Move it or Lose it!' sessions
  • Goal setting – what do you want to be doing in six weeks?
  • Guidance on use of relevant IT to develop communication and connection
  • Community Transport, to help get them out and about
  • Safe and Well check to highlight any problems with housing
  • Putting clients in touch with local partner organisations to help with things like fitting aids, checking on benefits and handyman services.

It's always part of the plan that support is time-limited, so there's a clear focus on helping to kickstart activities the client can continue independently. We'll also get in touch as a follow-up, to see how they are and if any further support is needed.

You don't need any experience, just your friendly smile. You can help by visiting in their home, telephone befriending, providing transport or shopping, it's up to you.

Availability Details

"It is up to you how much time you want to commit. Overall, once you become a registered volunteer, you will be offered appropriate engagements, which you are at liberty to accept or decline. The schedule of your engagements will be down to an agreement between you and your client, guided by their need and your availability. As a volunteer providing Befriending in the clients home, or as a weekly shopping volunteer, you should expect to allocate a minimum of 2 hours per week to perhaps engage with just one client. As a Transport volunteer or other intermittent support activity will be subject to the clients need. "
