At The Literacy Hubs , Portsmouth, we are working to develop a city of confident and ambitious young people with the literacy skills they need to succeed in life. Our First The Pompey Pirates is opening this September. The Pompey Pirates exists to equip disadvantaged children across Portsmouth with the Literacy skills they need to thrive. We are looking for volunteers from the Portsmouth area to support the young people who will be joining us at The Pompey Pirates from September 2020.
In a typical session you will support the young pirates with 1-1 reading support and working on their published project. Each term the young pirates work on a published project. The first term we work on our pirate stories that will be published as a book. In the second term we produce pirate films that will be shown in Portsmouth’s no.6 independent cinema. In the final term we produce pirate radio scripts that are showcased on Express FM.
You do not need to plan for the sessions. We provide a briefing at the start of each session so you understand the session's focus and get an understanding of the young pirate you will be working with. Your job is to support and encourage our young pirates throughout the session.
Sessions normally last for 2 hours and usually begin at 4pm, there are also some day time sessions that will support some of our primary children. Weekdays during term time.
Sessions will start in September with training happening during the summer.
