Family support group coordinator

Friends Without Borders supports people seeking asylum and refugees at a drop-in service in Portsmouth every Thursday. We are excited about our new Family Support Project that runs within our weekly drop-in. Through this new project, we provide children with supervised play, so that parents can join our free English lessons or receive casework advice. The project is run jointly with Homestart, and we are recruiting a coordinator to manage the project for Friends Without Borders.

 What the role involves:

  • Lead the weekly running of the support group on Thursdays between 10:00 and 12:00 in collaboration with the Homestart volunteer
  • Plan age-appropriate activities for children attending the drop-in
  • Coordinate a small team of volunteers involved with the project
  • Promote the inclusion and involvement of children and parents attending the group
  • Help promote a positive welcoming atmosphere at each session
  • Be responsible for selecting a range of suitable toys from the local Toy Library
  • Help set up the play area ready for opening and clear at the end
  • Report any family welfare concerns to the safeguarding leads

What we are looking for:

  • Experience of working with children in an early years setting
  • Enthusiasm and creativity in planning and leading activities for children
  • Good communication and team-working skills
  • A strong commitment to help
  • Sensitivity to people’s needs and vulnerabilities
  • Enhanced DBS checks preferred but will be undertaken if not in place

What you gain:

  • Making a difference to families living in difficult circumstances
  • Being part of a friendly and welcoming team
  • Building leadership skills
  • A wider experience of different cultures
  • Having fun engaging with young people

This role is voluntary but reasonable expenses can be paid
