Dementia Befriender

People with dementia are often harder to find volunteer befrienders. We are looking for volunteers to spend time with people with various stages of dementia who would like some company during the day.

Volunteers will be matched with a cared-for person who has dementia and will visit them in their home or take them out in the local area for 2 hours on a regular basis. This valuable service will provide carers in your community with a break from their responsibilities, whilst giving the cared for person the chance to befriend someone new and engage with shared interests.

Some people are worried they don't have the skills, or that their client is not benefiting from the visits. Even people with severe dementia can feel the positive emotional effects of social interaction for hours after the memory of the visit has gone.

Core tasks

  • Befriending
  • Visiting a cared-for person with Dementia in their home to offer stimulating conversation and/or engaging in activities with them
  • Taking a cared-for person with Dementia out for a walk/ or to visit local places of interest

If you feel that you could visit someone with issues such as memory loss and confusion, or even in some more specific cases, lower levels of verbal communication or hallucinations, we would love to hear from you!

You will not be required or encouraged to provide any form of personal care for the client or their carer.
