Help us inspire disadvantaged children without leaving your home!
I Can Be aims to broaden children's horizons and raise their aspirations by introducing them to a wide range of jobs and professionals. Our main programme is for girls aged 7–8 years old. We also run a smaller programme for boys (ICB Boys).
Our Volunteers help us introduce children to the world of work. For example, we are looking for Virtual Volunteers who can record a short video clip about their job, which we can use to build remote learning activities. We are also seeking Virtual Volunteers to host live 'virtual' I Can Be visits (via videoconferencing) as part of our programme that introduces our children to a wide range of professionals. Our visits programme runs from January to July every year.
About I Can Be
I Can Be is a registered charity (Number 1188905) that aims to break down barriers to opportunity for children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Our workplace visits programme brings 7- and 8-year-old girls into the world of work, broadening horizons and helping them to discover the breadth of opportunity around them. Run through schools, the programme gives the girls an opportunity to research, visit and interview a wide range of professionals in their workplaces during their working day.
Targeting inner-city primary schools, I Can Be enables girls to explore jobs they otherwise may never be exposed to, building their curiosity and confidence along the way.
Within the UK, we are currently working in inner-city London. We choose the areas of Greater London we work in very carefully, identifying where there are high levels of disadvantage and there is less likelihood that girls will be exposed to a variety of jobs or visit neighbourhoods outside of their own.
Alongside our main programme we also run a smaller programme for boys (ICB Boys).
We are seeking Virtual Volunteers from as wide a range of jobs and sectors as possible, including hospitality, healthcare, skilled manual trades, science, academia, the arts, finance, technology and not-for-profit, among others.
We are looking for professionals who feel passionately about raising the aspirations of disadvantaged children. Volunteers also need to be able to communicate with children, including talking about their job in a clear and simple way so that 7–8-year-old children can understand (ie using simple language and avoiding jargon).
I Can Be Volunteers also need to be personable and enthusiastic, so that they can engage with and inspire children.
