Free event will inspire women of the future

A free day of festivities to celebrate young women in Portsmouth is being held at The Charles Dickens Centre in Lake Road.

The event, which takes place on Saturday 10 March, will be hosted by young women aged between 11 and 19 who attend Portsmouth City Council’s Youth Clubs.

Visitors can participate in a variety of activities by women, for women, set to inspire, entertain and showcase the talents of individuals taking part in this day of celebration. The event ties in with International Women’s Day on 8 March, a worldwide day of festivities which highlights the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women since the day it was first instigated by the Suffragettes in 1911.

The day will focus on encouraging young women, aged 11 plus, to have a go at a range of activities, to showcase their talents, try something new and to enjoy a day meeting inspirational women.
Artist Jeannie Driver is co-ordinating the event. She said: “There is an amazing energy when women collaborate to make something happen. It is not only to remember the 100 years of women’s votes, but to celebrate all women’s success and to strive for more, by sharing experiences, encouragement and inspiration.
“I’m really passionate about this project, creating an environment to encourage young women to reach high, to celebrate their achievements and to meet inspirational women. It’s fantastic to help bring people together to create a buzz that hopefully will have lasting effects.
“It’s been inspiring working with the young women from the youth clubs to create and develop this event. We’ve been making banners, badges and planning the day so it will be a fun day for all young women.”

The event will have a relaxed feel with different activities taking place across the building, including performances on the main stage, group activities, a chill-out area, displays and workshops. One of the performances will be from youth club members who have been taught by a professional voice coach from Rant Studio, to sing individual pieces and perform as part of a group.

Other activities will include a digital arts project from Aspex Gallery and a flash mob dance session led by Pompey in the Community. There will also be speed meetings, where visitors can chat with women working in various careers including journalism, science, the arts, and business, about their experiences.

A Baked Off activity will see entrants pitting their baking skills against one another. Entries will be judged and the lucky winner will win a voucher. There will also be a raffle and additional vouchers to be won on the day.

To join in the celebrations and activities simply come down to the centre between 12pm and 4pm and have a go! Refreshments will be available for visitors.
